🧭

Before you go with HeyLocals

What to expect from your trip

A trip with HeyLocals isn’t a standard holiday, with every minute planned out, or a chance to “save” anyone.

It’s a chance to meet people and share everyday life in places that can be lively, complex and sometimes challenging.

If that's what you're after, you're in the right place.

🌍

1. You’re a guest in someone else’s home

You’re joining a community with its own ways of doing things.

  • ●

    You don't set the rules

  • ●

The pace may be different from home

  • ●

    Priorities won't always match yours

That's part of the experience. And often the best part of it.

👉 Curiosity, respect and listening come before action.

🤝

2. You're not there to "save" anyone

Your role is to work alongside the people already there.

  • ●

    The projects existed before you

  • ●

The local team know what they're doing

  • ●

Your role is to support, not replace

Taking part can mean:

  • supporting
  • watching and learning
  • listening
  • sharing time

That’s a contribution too.

🛠️

3. The daily routine may be flexible

On many projects:

  • ●

days aren't timetabled to the minute

  • ●

a bit of initiative is helpful

  • ●

    adaptability goes a long way

What you won't always find:

  • an hour-by-hour schedule
  • someone constantly telling you what to do

What you will find:

  • space to get involved
  • people to meet and relationships to build
  • a new setting to understand before you get involved

👉 You'll always have a local coordinator alongside you, and initiative is always welcome.

🌀

4. Cultural differences aren't a problem to solve

They're part of the trip.

  • ●

    A slower pace

  • ●

    Different ways of communicating

  • ●

Working styles that are different from what you're used to

It can feel disorienting at first. Then, more often than not, it becomes the most rewarding part of the trip.

⚠️ Notice when you find yourself thinking:

  • "We do it better back home"
  • "They just need to get organised"
  • "I don't get why they don't change"

👉 We don't judge here. 👉 We watch, listen and learn.

🧠

5. You have a part to play too

What we do:

  • we vet the projects
  • we help travellers get ready
  • we support you before, during and after

What you bring to the experience matters too.

What we ask of you:

  • ●

    an open mind

  • ●

    flexibility

  • ●

asking for help when you need it

  • ●

    being honest with yourself

If something's not right:

👉 message us 👉 talk it through 👉 tell us what’s worrying you

You can come to us for support.

❤️

6. It's not for everyone (and that's okay)

No judgement either way.

It's not for you if:

  • ●

your priority is a picture-perfect trip

  • ●

you need a high level of comfort

  • ●

you find unexpected changes very difficult

  • ●

you don’t want to adapt to a different way of life

It's for you if:

  • ●

    you're curious

  • ●

you’re willing to try things outside your comfort zone

  • ●

you’re comfortable not having all the answers

  • ●

you value meeting people on their own terms

✨

A few things to remember

Travelling with HeyLocals means:

  • ●

step into another way of life with respect

  • ●

be open to situations that aren’t straightforward

  • ●

learn and grow, even when it feels uncomfortable

If all of this still feels right for you,
you may be ready to take the next step.

We’d love to help you get there. 🌍
