Project details

Help with repairs and renovation alongside an experienced local supervisor.
A classroom to paint or a communal space to repair: in Antigua, you’ll join maintenance and renovation work requested by the community. The local supervisor knows the site and will show you where your help is needed.
You might prepare materials, paint, plaster or help with small repairs, depending on the work in progress and your abilities. You don’t need construction experience, but you’ll need a willingness to learn, follow instructions and do practical, sometimes physical work.
Once the tools are put away, there’s time for life with your host family, a walk around the city or an activity from the local calendar.

Learn through working together
Work with the supervisor and learn as you go, even without previous experience. Care, willingness and following instructions are part of your contribution.

From Monday to Friday, you’ll spend around three to four hours a day at the project, in a morning or afternoon shift. Tasks include preparing materials, painting, plastering and small maintenance tasks. On your first day, you’ll meet the staff and learn how to get to your placement.
Outside your shift, walk Antigua’s streets, stop for a coffee or meet fellow participants. The local calendar offers free salsa, cooking and Tandem when scheduled, plus chances to meet people. Set aside some money for lunch and any optional excursions you’d like to join.
Weekends are free. Enjoy Antigua at your own pace, visit a coffee farm or arrange an outing or trip to Lake Atitlán. The local team can help you consider options that suit your interests.

Explore volcanic landscapes beyond Antigua on an optional outing, according to conditions and time available.

Maintaining a school or public building involves different stages, often spread over time. The programme supports work requested by the community, with guidance from an experienced local supervisor who knows the job and is used to working with international volunteers.
One week may involve preparing surfaces and painting; another may include mixing cement, repairing a wall or moving materials. Tiling, masonry and other work depend on the current site and your abilities. You are not expected to take on a technical trade without training. Tasks are agreed locally, and specialist work stays with appropriately skilled people.
The work can be physical, outdoors and at a different pace from what you are used to. Long trousers and closed shoes are required. Pack work gloves, sturdy footwear and safety glasses according to the programme list. Ask for a demonstration before using unfamiliar tools or starting a new task, and discuss any limits or difficulties.
Your contribution comes through daily teamwork and care in your work. A single stay does not guarantee completion of a building. Shifts are around three to four hours, Monday to Friday, in the morning or afternoon. Free hours leave space for host-family life, the centre’s calendar and discovering the area.
Beyond the project, walk Antigua’s streets, stop for a coffee or meet fellow participants. When you arrive, you’ll discover the local activities calendar: free salsa, cooking and Tandem when scheduled, with different events each week. Optional tours and excursions are arranged separately.
🏡 Stay with a Guatemalan host family selected by the local team, possibly alongside other international volunteers. The standard arrangement is a shared room with participants of the same gender and a similar age, and a shared bathroom.
Rooms generally sleep two to four people, depending on the assigned house and guest numbers. Breakfast and dinner are included every day, including weekends.
Bedding, a towel, drinking water, hot showers and Wi-Fi are provided. Connection quality and continuity of some services may differ from what you’re used to.
Shared meals and conversations when you get home help you get to know family life. You’ll have a key and can organise your outings independently.
Tell us about dietary needs before departure. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free alternatives are available by prior arrangement. Allergies and particular requirements need individual confirmation.
Prefer a different arrangement?
What about free time? The local team offers an activity calendar including free salsa and cooking classes. Try something new and spend time with fellow international volunteers and participants. Depending on the calendar, photo walks, sports and other activities may also be offered.
For Spanish practice, join Tandem, a free exchange with a local student. You meet to chat and help each other: you practise Spanish while they practise a language you know.
If you’re starting from scratch or prefer learning with a teacher, you can request a Spanish course in a small group or individual lessons, from beginner to advanced.
Antigua is also a base for exploring more of Guatemala. Discover markets, cultural places and colonial ruins, or arrange coffee-plantation visits and outings nearby. For trips further afield, the team can help you plan Lake Atitlán, Semuc Champey or Tikal, taking account of travel and the time needed.
🛡️ Your arrival is arranged with the local team. A representative welcomes you at the airport and helps you begin the journey to Antigua. After booking, you’ll receive the meeting point, clear instructions and contacts for when you need help.
Your host family is selected by the local team to welcome international participants. Learn the house rules and get to know the people you can turn to while settling in. Whether other participants are staying there will depend on your dates.
At orientation, meet the team and get advice on transport, local customs and places to go. You’ll also receive a 24/7 emergency contact.
Follow the guidance, use recommended transport and take care of your belongings. If something makes you uncomfortable, talk to the team. You can ask for support whenever you need it.
At the work site, follow the supervisor and use the specified protective equipment. Bring long trousers, sturdy closed shoes, work gloves and safety glasses as listed in your departure guidance. Only use tools or take on work after receiving appropriate instructions.
🧭 Before activities begin, meet the team and get the information you need to settle in, understand the project and organise your days. Welcome materials include the orientation time and team contacts.
Orientation covers:
Your programme, activities and role.
Practical safety guidance, rules and local customs.
A short introductory walk around the area.
Cultural activities and available excursions.
A short, free Spanish-level assessment.
Basic English is enough. Spanish isn’t required, but it’s useful.
On your first journey to the project, a team member accompanies you, introduces you to staff and explains what you’ll do. They show the route from your accommodation so you can travel independently afterwards. Depending on the distance, you may walk or use local transport. Set aside some money for any daily transport you’ll need.
✈️ Fly into La Aurora Airport in Guatemala City, code GUA. We recommend arriving on Sunday before the programme starts on Monday.
Airport welcome and transfer to Antigua are included. The drive is around one hour, though traffic can change this.
Send your flight date, time, airline and number as soon as you have them. After booking confirmation, you’ll receive meeting instructions and operational contacts.
If you can’t find the person meeting you, stay at the meeting point and contact the team: they’ll help you find each other. Please let them know about delays or flight changes as soon as you can.
📱 A practical tip: for internet from arrival, consider setting up an eSIM before travelling. You can explore Airalo options here.
If you’re already in Guatemala or want to arrive on another day, agree arrangements beforehand. We can check whether extra nights or other services are available and explain any additional costs before you book.
The standard homestay ends on Saturday, with check-out by 11:00 and breakfast included. Other accommodation has its own confirmed check-out time.
Your return airport journey is arranged separately, and the team can help you organise it. Allow enough time to reach Guatemala City, taking account of traffic and your airline’s check-in requirements.

Choose a project and tell us when you’d like to travel. Applying is free, with no obligation to book.
After your application, we'll put you in touch with your dedicated coordinator. They'll walk you through everything and answer your questions.
When you're ready, pay the deposit to lock in your spot. You'll get everything you need: local contacts, a visa guide and your pre-trip pack.
Pack your bag and travel. On arrival you'll find other travellers like you, a welcoming local team, and a trip you'll be talking about for a while.
