Thoughtful, consistent care
Discover the work that supports horses’ wellbeing and the centre’s activities. Your role is animal care; therapeutic sessions remain the professionals’ responsibility.

From Monday to Friday, you’ll spend around three to four hours a day at the project, in a morning or afternoon shift. Tasks include feeding and grooming horses and cleaning their spaces. On your first day, you’ll meet the staff and learn how to get to your placement.
Outside your shift, explore San José’s markets and neighbourhoods, go for a walk or meet fellow participants. The local calendar offers free salsa, cooking and Tandem when scheduled, plus chances to meet people. Set aside some money for lunch and any optional excursions you’d like to join.
Weekends are free. Discover the city or arrange an outing among Costa Rica’s volcanoes, forests and other areas.

Take time to explore squares, markets and neighbourhoods, perhaps with fellow participants.

Before taking part in assisted activities, horses need good daily care and people who look after their wellbeing. This programme near San José supports the care of horses used in animal-assisted activities.
Help staff prepare food, groom horses, clean stables and maintain spaces. Tasks follow the centre’s routine, your experience and the animals’ needs. Care in everyday actions matters: a clean bowl and a tidy space are part of the work.
You will not act as a therapist or lead therapeutic sessions. The clinical relationship with participants, decisions and activity leadership remain with professionals. Veterinary care also needs appropriate qualifications and authorisation. Riding and horse-riding outings are not included.
Bring an interest in animals, willingness to do practical work and ability to follow instructions. Basic English is enough. Spanish is not required, but helpful. Availability of this specific placement is checked before confirmation. Animals, activities and shifts may change with the centre’s needs.
Beyond the project, explore San José’s markets and neighbourhoods, go for a walk or meet fellow participants. When you arrive, you’ll discover the local activities calendar: free salsa, cooking and Tandem when scheduled, with different events each week. Optional tours and excursions are arranged separately.

To build confidence in Spanish, join Tandem, a free conversation exchange with a local student. You practise Spanish while they practise a language you know.
If you prefer learning with a teacher, even from scratch, you can add an optional small-group or individual Spanish course. Classes cost extra and cover beginner to advanced levels.
There’s time to discover San José, browse the Central Market, visit the National Theatre or follow your curiosity around the city. With a few free days, consider volcanoes and forests, rafting or zip-lining, or a weekend on the Pacific or Caribbean coast.
