About section

Join local staff caring for horses, donkeys and mules as they recover.

A horse’s recovery depends on patient care, day after day. Near Antigua, a rescue and rehabilitation centre looks after horses, donkeys and mules, with routines shaped around each animal’s needs.

You can join staff in preparing food, cleaning stables, grooming and maintaining the centre’s spaces. Veterinary training isn’t needed for these everyday tasks; being ready for practical work, listening and following instructions matters. Staff decide how to approach each animal and which tasks suit your experience.

Outside the centre, there’s time for host-family life, exploring Antigua and meeting people through the local activity calendar.

FAQs

A horse’s recovery calls for consistency: food, hygiene, well-kept spaces and respectful interaction. The programme works with a rescue and rehabilitation centre for horses, donkeys and mules near Antigua.

Help staff prepare food, brush animals, clean stables and maintain the centre’s spaces. Tasks depend on the day’s needs and your experience. Older animals and those recovering may need particular care; staff decide how you should approach them and which tasks to assign.

Veterinary care stays with qualified professionals. Riding lessons, horse-riding outings and clinical activities are not promised. Follow staff guidance on contact with animals, without forcing it. Communication or fundraising tasks may also be available if useful to the centre.

Be ready for practical work, with suitable clothes, sturdy shoes and a willingness to learn. Shifts are normally three to four hours on weekdays, in the morning or afternoon. The centre and role are checked before confirmation, according to availability.

Beyond the project, walk Antigua’s streets, stop for a coffee or meet fellow participants. When you arrive, you’ll discover the local activities calendar: free salsa, cooking and Tandem when scheduled, with different events each week. Optional tours and excursions are arranged separately.

🏡 Stay with a Guatemalan host family selected by the local team, possibly alongside other international volunteers. The standard arrangement is a shared room with participants of the same gender and a similar age, and a shared bathroom.

Rooms generally sleep two to four people, depending on the assigned house and guest numbers. Breakfast and dinner are included every day, including weekends.

Bedding, a towel, drinking water, hot showers and Wi-Fi are provided. Connection quality and continuity of some services may differ from what you’re used to.

Shared meals and conversations when you get home help you get to know family life. You’ll have a key and can organise your outings independently.

Tell us about dietary needs before departure. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free alternatives are available by prior arrangement. Allergies and particular requirements need individual confirmation.

Prefer a different arrangement?

  • A private room with a host family, including breakfast and dinner. Request any private bathroom separately.
  • Student residences for ages 18–26, available to individuals and groups, with breakfast and dinner.
  • A three-star hotel, with a private room and bathroom and breakfast included. Lunch and dinner are separate.
  • An apartment, with an equipped kitchen and Wi-Fi, without meals. This option is offered in four-week blocks.
  • A hostel, with a shared or private room. Meals and bathroom arrangements are confirmed in the quote.

What about free time? The local team offers an activity calendar including free salsa and cooking classes. Try something new and spend time with fellow international volunteers and participants. Depending on the calendar, photo walks, sports and other activities may also be offered.

For Spanish practice, join Tandem, a free exchange with a local student. You meet to chat and help each other: you practise Spanish while they practise a language you know.

If you’re starting from scratch or prefer learning with a teacher, you can request a Spanish course in a small group or individual lessons, from beginner to advanced.

Antigua is also a base for exploring more of Guatemala. Discover markets, cultural places and colonial ruins, or arrange coffee-plantation visits and outings nearby. For trips further afield, the team can help you plan Lake Atitlán, Semuc Champey or Tikal, taking account of travel and the time needed.

🛡️ Your arrival is arranged with the local team. A representative welcomes you at the airport and helps you begin the journey to Antigua. After booking, you’ll receive the meeting point, clear instructions and contacts for when you need help.

Your host family is selected by the local team to welcome international participants. Learn the house rules and get to know the people you can turn to while settling in. Whether other participants are staying there will depend on your dates.

At orientation, meet the team and get advice on transport, local customs and places to go. You’ll also receive a 24/7 emergency contact.

Follow the guidance, use recommended transport and take care of your belongings. If something makes you uncomfortable, talk to the team. You can ask for support whenever you need it.

With animals, follow staff guidance and respect each animal’s behaviour and pace. Enter animal areas only when instructed, and leave treatment to qualified staff. Bring practical clothing and the protective equipment specified for your project. Report any incident or difficulty promptly.

🧭 Before activities begin, meet the team and get the information you need to settle in, understand the project and organise your days. Welcome materials include the orientation time and team contacts.

Orientation covers:

  • Your programme, activities and role.

  • Practical safety guidance, rules and local customs.

  • A short introductory walk around the area.

  • Cultural activities and available excursions.

  • A short, free Spanish-level assessment.

Basic English is enough. Spanish isn’t required, but it’s useful.

On your first journey to the project, a team member accompanies you, introduces you to staff and explains what you’ll do. They show the route from your accommodation so you can travel independently afterwards. Depending on the distance, you may walk or use local transport. Set aside some money for any daily transport you’ll need.

✈️ Fly into La Aurora Airport in Guatemala City, code GUA. We recommend arriving on Sunday before the programme starts on Monday.

Airport welcome and transfer to Antigua are included. The drive is around one hour, though traffic can change this.

Send your flight date, time, airline and number as soon as you have them. After booking confirmation, you’ll receive meeting instructions and operational contacts.

If you can’t find the person meeting you, stay at the meeting point and contact the team: they’ll help you find each other. Please let them know about delays or flight changes as soon as you can.

📱 A practical tip: for internet from arrival, consider setting up an eSIM before travelling. You can explore Airalo options here.

If you’re already in Guatemala or want to arrive on another day, agree arrangements beforehand. We can check whether extra nights or other services are available and explain any additional costs before you book.

Your return journey

The standard homestay ends on Saturday, with check-out by 11:00 and breakfast included. Other accommodation has its own confirmed check-out time.

Your return airport journey is arranged separately, and the team can help you organise it. Allow enough time to reach Guatemala City, taking account of traffic and your airline’s check-in requirements.
